Road accidents kill 369 in Thailand during New Year

BANGKOK, 4 Jan — Road accidents in the past six of seven most dangerous days during the New Year holiday have killed 369 people and injured 4,514 throughout Thailand, according to the Interior Ministry on Thursday. Bangkok has had the most casualties of all provinces, followed by Khon Kaen and Nakhon Pathom Provinces. Twenty people were killed in the capital.
According to Interior Ministry, drunk driving caused 42 per cent of the incidents. Speeding,reckless driving and motorcyclist not wearing helmets were blamed for the rest.
December 30, 2007 saw the highest rate of deaths with 85 people killed. Last year, more than 5,000 road accidents were monitored across the country. The death toll was at 480 and the number of injured victims was at 4,900 during the period. — MNA/Xinhua
