Explosion in Istanbul garbage bin wounds three

ISTANBUL, 4 Jan — An explosion in a garbage bin in Istanbul wounded three people on Wednesday, private broadcaster CNN Turk reported on its website. State news agency Anatolian said two people had been injured in the explosion in Istanbul’s Kucukcekmece District, the same district where a bomb blast killed a woman last week. That bomb attack had come just a day after a 25-year-old man carrying a backpack filled with explosives was arrested outside an underground station in central Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city. Authorities have stepped up security in the main cities around the Eid holiday and New Year’s celebrations, and tensions are running especially high because Turkey has been carrying out cross-border military strikes in northern Iraq aimed at the separatist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).
